Down the stretch
At this time of year you’re trying to be smart about the way you go about your work and training to ensure you maintain your strength –- mentally and physically –- through the most crucial part of the schedule.
You still try to make it to the weight room a couple times a week, maybe pick some days to take a few less groundballs and a few less swings.
Willie’s done a great job of cutting down on batting practice and extra work towards the end of the year, plus we have a lot of veterans who’ve played into October before. I lean on them a little and watch how they go about it.
The stretch is when you have to dig down deep and see what’s left in the tank. It’s a great part of the athletic challenge in baseball – our season is a marathon.
Personally, I feel real good. I think I learned a lesson in pacing myself last year. It was my first full season and I got to a point where I ran into a little wall. Of course, it also helps to have the lead that we have in our division this season because it’s allowed Willie to give the regulars a rest here and there. So I feel great, ready to roll.
I had a little rest when I sat out the second game of our double-header with the Braves, but I don’t think my teammates and coaches like having me on the bench. I’m pretty fidgety, walking around, getting up, sitting down. Jose Reyes is pretty active, too. We’re like head cheerleaders when we’re not in the game, the way we’re always yelling from the dugout.
I don’t like taking days off, but I recognize it’s good for the club to get some other guys at-bats and get a little rest heading into the home stretch.
But there’s still three weeks left in the regular season and I’m going to focus on each game, one at a time. There’s no rush to get to the postseason. I enjoy every game. Sure, we have a big lead but as a competitor you want to win every game and get a hit every at-bat, regardless of how far ahead or behind you might be in the standings.
We still want to win every game and hopefully get to the postseason with a full head of steam. The idea is to finish strong.
We got a big boost this week was when Cliff Floyd rejoined us. Not just because of his presence in the middle of the order but because he’s an emotional leader in the clubhouse, too. He’s good friends with a lot of the guys on our club and he’s great to have around. He’s part of the glue that holds the team together.

David, I'm starting to get pumped for the postseason! I have a feling it's gonna be a fun October for you guys and us Mets fans.

David...I just want to say that from the moment I saw you in your first game as a MET your smile won me over. You just seemed like a real person who not only loved what he was doing but loved his fans as well. Your an amazing player and I cannot wait to see what your future holds in baseball. I've been a MET for 2 years now and I will be a MET for life. The team that your working with is incredible!!! The magic you feel watching all of you together is unreal. Keep up the hard work, enjoy yourself and good luck with the rest of the season. I am looking forward to being in the stands when you play the Florida Marlins. Good Luck with everything.

Thanks for the post David! I just got my playoff ticket package, and I'm THRILLED beyond belief to be able to cheer you guys on to the end. I'll be at Shea tonight as well, screaming my heart out. And Sunday too! I'm giving up a slew of Fashion Week events to be able to support the team in person. Fashionably, of course.
I'm really hoping Cliff Floyd is around next year, even if he's platooning. Once he has the surgery, he'll be up and running, and it would be great to see him retire at the top of his game. Not that I'm eager for him to retire!
Stay healthy, happy, and as positive as you've been all season. You're our special guy.

I absolutely cannot wait for the postseason! Its a really exciting time for us METS fans! Keep doing what you are doing - its really good to know you will be with the team for a good long time.
Its also nice to know a couple of Virginians are on the team! (you and John Maine of course). I actually live in the town where John went to high school - Stafford, VA!
Lets Go Mets! Lets Go Mets! Lets Go Mets! I believe!

I've been waiting 20 years for another chance at the World Series and to me this is the best team we have put together since that time. Although we had a good team in 2000 we were still missing a few pieces. It has been such an exciting season for Met fans. My husband and I watch every game and then rewatch "Fast Forward" the next morning at 5:00 am! With you, Jose and Carlos at the cornerstone of this franchise this team will hopefully be competitive for years to come. Go Mets. Can't wait for October.

Wow, awesome job as of late! I'm extremely glad that you're getting better pitches and getting back into the hitting and whatnot. Anyways, haha, you and Jose on the bench can be quite entertaining though to watch although as always it's alwahys better to see you on the field. So keep it up and thanks for playing such great baseball!

Hey David, I told my 8 year old son that this year he's not getting his perfect attendance award in school because if you guys go all the way, ticket tape parade here we come. Heyy David!!! I went to the game yesterday and I just wanted to say that you and the rest of the guys played great, although you always play great! I know you probably get thousands of invitations to parties, but I am sending one to you at Shea and it would totally be a dream come true if you or any of the other guys could come! My family and I have been diehard Mets fans for as long as i can remember. And i especially love how you Jose Reyes have so much fun like with all those handshakes and everything. Anyways...Thanks, and have a great rest of the season. And good luck in the post-season!!!---GOTTA BELIEVE!!!

Like everyone else I am very excited about October baseball this year instead of the football. The team has played so hard for us and we all wish you guys the best of luck. However, I am also, like many, superstitious. Nowadays we have blogs instead of newspaper columns, but don't forget what happened with David Cone in '88. You don't want you commnets on someone's blackboard as a rallying cry. As a Tides fan growing up, maybe you remember the pictures of Elster and Darling on the pitcher's mound after the '86 win. Here's to you getting to repeat it.

I know you're not looking ahead to October just yet, but I just wanted to wish you good luck in advance! It's been quite a ride this season, through both good stretches and not so good ones, and you have been a complete and true winner through it all, David. I'm really going to miss these little posts when the season's over--thank you for sharing a little bit of yourself and your baseball life with all of the fans, it's been a genuine joy to read and it truly shows what a wonderful and outstanding person you are, both on and off the field. Go get 'em, tiger!! I'm positively bouncing out of my chair at the mere thought of you getting to play in your first October! You are so awesome, David. :)

I don't blame you for being fidgety when you aren't playing a game. Whenever i would sit out at a softball game, I can't stop moving. Meanwhile, I never really started in a game so I think i may have annoyed a few people...o well. i only started 3 out of 10 games so...yea. I wasn't even put in a position i enjoy playing! David,
Looks like your timing is back. You're swinging the bat much better lately and taking the ball to right. When you do that you're at your best.
From what I saw of Shawn Green the past few days, it looks like he's emphasized hitting the ball where it is pitched as opposed to trying to pull everything. As you would expect, the results have been positive. Tell him to keep his weight back and, as my college coach use to say, "see the ball, hit the ball."
It's great to see that you will be a Met for a while. Good luck down the stretch. Bring it home.

Hey David,
I just got home from the game at Shea tonight and even though you may have lost, i was still there in the end to support my new york team. I've been a mets fan since the day i came home from the hospital, literally. My dad couldn't wait for me to see my first game. I'm ecstatic that you have a 6 year contract with the mets and i hope you continue with the mets for your whole career. I will always be a fan of yours no matter what team you are on.
You are a devoted player, up for learning new techniques, a true player to your team and yourself. Don't worry about the media or the business side of playing, just go out there and play America's Favorite pastime game.Sometimes it can just be as simple as fun and games. Good luck with the upcoming games in Sept. and in the postseason. Stay healthy!

Home stretch, what am I going to do after you guys end after the world series?. Make it happen. I know it. Mets are making it, you guys are going far, so make it happen. The line up is amazing, the pitching is getting its wins, the defense is strong and we got it. Omar Minaya did great as GM in getting the right guys for a promising 06 season and future. For starters congrats to you and the entire Met team, you gaves are giving us something to smile about, and look forward to watching baseball in Oct instead of watching the NY football teams lose. Growing up in NY in the 70's Seaver was our hero and called the franchise, I think its about time u start wearing that title and the Mets name you Capt of this team. As much as Carlos and Carlos are stars, I feel the team stars are U and Jose. By the way good luck with you and Jose and Carlos going to Japan to respresent MLB and the Mets. One more thing, I read where Jose goes home every night and his mom cooks his dinner, have you been there for dinner yet!!!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK ETHIC AND YOU ARE OUR CAPTAIN OF THIS TEAM.

Hi David, good game today against the Dodgers. You went 3 for 3 and got the game winning hit. Even though the Dodgers took the lead befor 2-1, I knew this game wans't over. In the end I was right because we won 3-2. The double play that ended the game was a great play to. Wanger struck out the batter and then Stinett threw out the runner at second, we win. It was a good game. Well goodluck tommorrow against the Dodgers. Let's beat them and then we could decrease the magic number to 5. I got this e-mail and had to share:
HER DIARY
Sunday night - I thought he was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a bar to have a drink. I was shopping with my friends all day, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment. Conversation wasn't flowing so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk, he agreed but he kept quiet and absent.
I asked him what was wrong - he said, "Nothing."
I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset. He said it had nothing to do with me and not to worry.
On the way home I told him that I loved him, he simply smiled and kept driving.
I can't explain his behavior; I don't know why he didn't say, "I love you too"
When we got home I felt as if I had lost him, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore.
He just sat there and watched TV, he seemed distant and absent.
Finally I decided to go to bed. About 10 minutes later he came to bed and to my surprise he responded to my caress and we made love, but I still felt that he was distracted and his thoughts were somewhere else.
I decided that I could not take it anymore, so I was going to confront him with the situation but he had fallen asleep.
I started crying and cried until I too fell asleep.
I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else.
HIS DIARY
Today the Mets lost, but at least I got laid.

David,
We met in Port St Lucie your first spring with the team. I took a picture of you with my girls, and now I look at it, you were so young! The following spring we got another picture and you signed the previous one. This year you were nice enough to take yet another picture with my daughter (whom I have asked you to marry) LOL. and you signed last years photo. I don't know if you remember or not, but you promised me that spring 2007 you will again sign the one i took. you said "it's a date" and I'm gunna hold you to it. :)
I grew up @ shea stadium and my girls have been Mets fans since they were born (they had no choice) We now live in Florida but the Mets will always be "our team". I proudly display my Mets license plate on my car, because I want the whole world to know that I love my Mets. We thank you for helping make our team become #1 and we cannot wait for the series to begin! You are a doll. see you in the spring.

My sister is going to the game today, but only so she can get your bobble-head doll for me!! i am so excited for the post-season to start. the last time i went to a post-season game was when Robin Ventura hit that grand slam single in the 15th inning against the braves to win the game. now that was very exciting, but im sure that this year will be even better!! Hopefully I can get to batting practice one of these days. Keep swinging the bat, you are awesome. XOXOXOXO and many smooches!

Dear David:
I really try to enjoy what the Mets have wrought (no pun intended). This team won't match the one in 1986 (108-54), unless it goes 20-1 the rest of the way, but then, this team has dominated the league almost as much. I just sit back and enjoy, especially when you whack the baseball.
I just bought the trilogy of "Back to the Future". In the opening of the first one, Doc Brown says he wants to find out who wins the next 25 World Series. I wanted to say, "The Mets will win the next one in 1986!" Now I think I'll have more than one to mention.
(Yes, I know you were three on Saturday, 26 October 1985, but then does it matter?)

Hi David,
My name is Aja. I am 15 years old and I live in a rural town in Allegany County. My mom is currently working on a book with a retired mets player named Lenny Randle. We watch every mets game together and we are always talking about how we love watching you and Jose. We call you the two youths. I play softball for my high school and I love watching your game to see how I can improve mine. You are an encouragement to be and my siblings. I love the posts. Thanks for being an amazing player,
Aja

David,
Congrats on your recent hot streak! I'm sure that both you personally, and you as in the Mets, will finish off the season with a bang...maybe even a Series ring? I hope so!
With love,

Hi David, today I went to the game, I had so much fun but I'm sad that we lost. Trachsel just didn't have it today and I think Willie waited to long to take him out. I can't believe we lost. When I was on line they said that only 12 and under could get the David Wright Bobble head and I got mad, but in the end I got my bobble head. If they would've never gave me my bobble head, I would've lied and say that I'm 12.(even though I'm 15) I would've died if I didn't get my bobble head. Also I had seen you in the dugout, when you was swinging from on top of the dugout. You was funny. The play you made at third to was a great play. In the end we lost 9-1 but it's okay because we will win the next game. I still had fun anyway. Oh yeah, you know I saw a girl with a shirt that said, "Mrs.Wright". I was so mad to. It's okay though because I know that's an imposter and I'm the real future Mrs.Wright. I hope I could meet you in person one day though. You don't know how happy I'll be. I'll be going crazy. Well let me let you go. I'm sure you got a lot of other commets to read. Bye. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH WITH ALL MY HEART. Le't Go Mets!!!

Hey David!
I was at the game today, but we lost. ): I had fun anyway. Nice diving play today in the second inning! (: Too bad Trachsel couldn't get a win. I waited an hour and a half for you to come out of the dugout to give autographs, but you never came out. It's okay though. I was kind of disappointed that I didn't get a David Wright Bobblehead, even though it was for kids 12 and under. (I'm 17, but usually they don't care that much.) Apparently they did today. I was also mad when Willie took you out of the game today in the eighth inning. I guess he was trying to rest you. I was reading your new post and saw that you don't like getting the day off. I don't blame you. I hate it in softball when I get the day off! It really annoys me. I screamed that I loved you today, but I doubt that you heard me. I also waved to you. Good luck against the Marlins tomorrow night!

Magic number has been reduced now...you guys can sit back and relax. It's a nice feeling as a fan and a player to now it's just a matter of time. And it is, about time! I hope you guys enjoy the moment and gear up for what's ahead- Cardinals? Dodgers?...It won't matter because you have the best record in MLB and will, God-willing, coast to the WS...Good Luck in Miami!-Joy P.S.- Reyes smoked it again!!!

I'm a little concerned. I mean it's great to make the playoffs, but a quick exit is not a good thing. I mean many of us remember the last time a heralded Mets team went toe to toe with the boys from LA in the playoffs...Kirk Gibson ring a bell ?
Our 4-11 record against southpaws (ever since we traded X) is my primary concern given the Dodgers put in a couple against us this weekend and split the series. They proved they can stay on par with us and if Penny could pitch anything near his capability...look out. We are sorely missing the services of Xavier Nady. When that trade went down to re-acquire Roberto Hernandez I was baffled and the pickup of Manny Mota makes the deal look even worse. Granted, who would of thunk Mota would become available, but Roberto Hernandez...dude's a good pitcher but he's lost a little on the gun since last year. I mean Sean Green is a great pickup but lefties can bust him inside and Lastings just doesn't have the mileage to compete in the majors yet (he's still two years away).
David, when going up against the sinister hurlers, you, CarlosB, LaDuke, JVal and JRey have got to carry the ballclub.
I know you guys will...this is our year ! Let's GO Mets !

David, I was with some friends at Saturday's game. You are really finding your stride at the right time of the year. Way to go man. I am 43 years old and following the Mets since my first game at Shea in 1969 with my Uncle Paul (may he rest in peace). My knowledge of baseball is very sharp. When the Mets win the World Series this year and you receive your W.S MVP award remember that I said it today first. This year and many more winning season's are inevitable. We will show the people in the country what real baseball National League style is all about. I hope the Yankees make it to the show (no pitching)so we can show everyone who the real baseball team is in New York NOW!!! My life is filled with moments of the present not trying to relive the past. The New York Mets will always be NYC and the boroughs real baseball team, not a $200 million side show of primadona's like A-Rod (Mr. K) or Sheff or Giambi. So to you and all the boys of summer, Jose's, Hernandez's. Carlos's, Cliff, Shawn, Endy and Paulie and the entire pitching staff, players and coaches tell them Brooklyn Dave with son Jacob Hayes Kaplan (future NY MET he is 12) and Carly Reilly Kaplan the future is now. LETS GO METS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

'Bout time you updated! I was hoping you'd talk about the 20th Anniversary ceremony because I wanted to know if you guys had fun with the men who your current season is compared to, but alas, que sera sera. I'm glad you guys are pumped for the post season. I've waited 20 years for this and I'm loving watching such an energetic, charismatic, and let's face it, totally weird Mets ballclub dominate. To all you guys, keep giving it your all the whole way; it's gotten you this far, so keep it goin' for us all!

This day (9/11/06) is so incredible for NY fans since the tragic events 5 years ago. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I remember sitting on my porch from my appartment watching the smoke from the Towers blow southward with my brother at 5p.m. until sunset. It was so uncertain-life was so real then. I know you guys lost today and I found it very strange: ( D.Williams allowed 9 runs/ 11 hits)...It was strange. I also remember the day after 9/11- the daily lotto# was 911. My uncle was supposed to be working on the 57th floor in the South tower . God-willing and luckily, he was 'let-go' due to cut-backs months before the event. Not that I mean to bring a downside or bore you with the events that occurred. But, as N.Y. remembers this tragedy, the light still remains as Met fans remember 9/21- Piazza's payback to the events and hopefully you guys can turn this day (5 years later) as a memorial for fans by completely dominating the field on that day- Make 9/21/06 a day to remember in Mets history if possible [if not, make any other post 9/11/06 day prior to the playoffs the best offensive statement that the Mets can make and show the rest that the Mets are the best team in MLB---Can the Met offense get 20 runs??--It'd be nice and it could be done!]. Don't doubt yourselves or give up ever! God Bless,Joy

Wow - great bare-handed play. Have you ever thought of giving up baseball, moving to England and playing cricket? Oh, wait a minute, I don't think professional cricketers make the same kind of money! Darn it. Please win for me tomorrow. Your devoted UK fans have to stay up so late to watch you, don't get to bed until about 4 in the morning! And what's with all those empty seats in Florida? Has anyone got something better to do than watch the Mets?

David,
I remember watching you play in Norfolk Virginia in your last game before you were called up to the Major Leagues. I was completing my annual 2 week training in the
U.S. Navy Reserves. When I returned to New York you were playing 3rd base for the Mets and you hit a home run.
I was excited to see a young player come up with the Mets who has power and can hit tough pitches on both the outside part of the plate and on the inside part of the plate.
Some players have trouble with pitches in certain areas of the strike zone but you seem to be able to drive the ball to right field if it is on the outside part of the plate and keep your hands inside of the ball on inside pitches very well. I have seen you drive tough inside pitches to center field or to the opposite field at times.
You have good balance, a good weight transfer and good hand speed. Your able to stay back enough to hit or foul off nasty changeups and you aren't bothered by the curve ball to much either.
You are able to get deep into counts and get good pitches to hit. This is good but I think you could hit for more power by being a little more aggressive early in the count. I have seen you take pitches early in the count that you could drive out of the ball park.
You carry yourself with a determined confidence and seem to have a professional demeanor. This is an indication that you have developed good habits based on hard work. This fact reflects well on your high school coaches and possibly is due to some positive influence from your family.
Good luck in your career.
Dr. Christian Rodriguez

David,
My 15 year old son had the pleasure to meet you at the ESPN Zone in NYC last August after you played the Braves. He had his picture taken with you. Is there any way I can get the picture to you and have you sign it for him. He turns 16 soon and this would be a great gift. He idolizes you and looks up to you as a role model. Keep up the great work you do as a NY Met and also the image you have where kids look up to you. GO METS. Thanks Jim.

Hey David!
Nice win last night! I didn't get to watch the whole game because I had school the next day. I watched the news this morning and heard you guys won. Believe me, if I could have watched the whole game, I would have. Great job, 3-5,1 RBI! (2 doubles- go D-Wright!) Well, good luck tonight.

Hey David,
Nice game last night even though you really have nothing to worry about considering your 16 games ahead of your division, but that doesnt mean you should stop winning. I'm routing for you on your next game against the Marlins tonight. Hopefully Tom Glavine will throw a good game becasue he is your best pitcher right now considering everyone is injured.GO METS.
From,
Adam
P.S- email me sometime i would love to chat with you.

Hey David,
It's too bad you went into that mini-slump after the all-star game. You were on target for MVP,not that you're numbers aren't great. But your homerun pace dropped considerably. Do you think it had to do with the homerun derby?Good luck in the playoffs.Hope to get tix.

Well u didn't clinch tonight, but, you have been outstanding in showing the marlins you can't be kept down even after that awful loss the first game of the series. That's what I admire about this team- the guts to show that your team can't be messed with. The comeback of this series goes to show the fans that it ain't over until it's over...that's what I love about baseball. You never count teams out. Even mistakes/errors other teams make which seem to occur magically show that 'make mistakes and the Mets will make you pay!'...That's the miracle/magical/amazing feeling you get as a Met fan. Real baseball! Ups-and Downs and rollercoaster rides all season were so worth-it! Delgado in this series was hot! And, Lo Duca ( even playing through his thumb injury allows me to respect him as a player-even though I still miss Piazza in his position). Wow! So close to the clinch which will probably be set with Pedro's return, however, I wish you guys would hold out for Monday's game so you could clinch at home... Great going and keep up the good work!:+),Joy

Well David, I'm not a 13-? well however old your female fans get, probably 115 or something like that, but I do have a great tip for you. Your next bobble head... totally has to have it's tongue out. That would be hilarious. Well anyway, you're amazing, in many ways. Especially cause you're so humble. Let's all just keep believin'. Even though this year won't really be a miracle. And remember your team has the greatest fans in the world. We all love all of you, no matter your mistakes. Even if you don't make it, heck you've got 90 wins! 90! BEST RECORD IN ALL OF BASEBALL!! ALLL!! That's sick. Oh hey I'd love to get something signed by you, but I can't get up to the games very often, maybe we can work something out. I do run a cigar store...
Anway, Thanks David, your fan,
Joe

Hey David, It would be so cool if you did a signing at Build A Bear in Manhattan. I took my son last year to meet Cliff Floyd and in June he got to meet Trachsel and Heilman and it was on his birthday. You and Reyes should do it together. Take Care, Theresa
